I've been a retractable brush user since I started my journey in playing with makeup. It started with a P100+ retractable blush brush I bought in Divisoria and I'm hooked to retractable brushes ever since. Despite that retractable brush as something bought in Divisoria, but the bristles of that brush are so soft and gentle to the skin that up to now I use it when I travel since it's so compact and still reliable.
I would like to share with you my experiences with 3 of my retractable brushes. Brushes are an investment and they should be a value of your money.
I'll be reviewing these three retractable brushes: Real Techniques Kabuki Brush, Ecotools Powder Brush and Japonesque BB/CC Cream brush.
I use all of these brushes on powdered products, powdered blush, loose finishing powder, contour powder etc.
Size
Of all, the Real Techniques kabuki brush is the longest. But it's diameter is also smaller compared tot the three. The one with the longest diameter is the EcoTools. Japonesque is the shortest of the three. It has has the shortest bristles compared to the three. The Real Techniques has a clear plastic pink cap, the EcoTools has a bronze cap metal cap, the Japonesque has a black metal cap as well.
Retractability
I'm not sure if my term is correct, but this is how they all look like if you pull the retractable metal up.
The Japonesque brush almost completely covers the brush, there are a few bristles which peak through. The EcoTools is the one who cannot completely cover the brush, this is one thing I don't like in this retractable brush. I have to take note of it whenever I cover the brush. Real Techniques completely covers its brush and this is just right for me.
Shape
Japonesque brush has a dome shape brush with dual color which is one thing I like since it helps me whenever I clean it. The brush is kind of loose compared to the other two, maybe this is designed to be a bb/cc cream brush anyways.
EcoTools has a dome shape brush as well, this was really perfect as a powder brush, the density of the brush is just right as well.
The Real Techniques has an angled brush. The density is a little dense than the two. For me, this is the perfect blush brush since it's angled.
Performance
The Japonesque brush is the softest of all the three. The bristles are really gentle and soft. This brush wins this category of the gentleness of the brush. I like it as a powder brush and I love the way I can use it in baking, the bristles doesn't prick my undereye skin which is the characteristic I love most of this brush.
The EcoTools brush is the standard performing brush for me, I don't hate it, but I'm not crazy over it either. It just performs well in my opinion as it claims to be. You can't use this in baking though as it can prick sometimes my undereye skin.
The Real Techniques brush, I just love this, it's versatile in all types of powdered products. You can use it as blush, contour, as powder etc. It can prick my under eye skin though when I tried this once for baking. But for me this is just versatile and just perfectly made.
Durability
I thought I will not have any problems with this category since all these 3 brushes are "branded". But I was so damn disappointed with Japonesque Brush, after 1 week of using it just got detached from the case!
This was a major disappointment, and this is the most expensive of the three!!! Here I thought since it's more expensive, it will have the better quality and yet it has the most flimsy of al.
I can attest to the Eco Tools brush, it's really durable, this is the retractable brush that's with me for the longest time, years already. The Real Techniques is with me for more than a year already, and I'm really happy with it.
Price
The Eco Tools, I bought for P500 from a bazaar in World Trade Center. Then the Real Techniques I got for P500 online (Carousell). For the Japonesque, I got from Beauty Bar for P1750.
My Verdict
The brush that I will recommend and who won is the Real Techniques kabuki brush being 1st, and Eco Tools being 2nd. Don't bother wasting your money on Japonesque Retractable BB/CC cream brush, poorly made retractable case that it really irritates me up to this day.
